How do you obtain a Firearms Purchaser Identification Card and/or a Permit to Purchase a Handgun?
A1. You must apply at your local police department. If you do not have a local police department, you must apply at the nearest New Jersey State Police station (excluding toll roads, stations on the New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway, and Atlantic City Expressway).
You can download necessary forms from the NJ State Police website. (form STS033, SP66) Also, to save yourself a trip be sure to call your local police dept to find out what times the firearms division is open. Individuals must be fingerprinted when applying for a Firearms Purchaser Identification Card. ________________________________________
How do you buy rifles and/or shotguns, including bb, pellet, and black powder rifles?
A2. You need a current Firearms Purchaser Identification Card plus one additional form of photo identification that has the same current address as your ID. You will need to complete a Certificate of Eligibility Form. (for the purchase of a rifle or shotgun you will need to complete ATF form 4473.) A buyer who is not a citizen of the USA must provide additional documentation at time of purchase to establish that he/she has resided in a State continuously for at least 90 days immediately prior to the purchase.

How do you buy handguns, including bb, pellet, and black powder handguns.
A3. Within the State of NJ a purchase of only one handgun per 31 days is permitted. The buyer must have a current Firearms Identification Card as well as a current, valid Permit to Purchase a Handgun and one additional form of photo identification- all current, same address. You will need to complete ATF form 4473. Once you purchase a firearm how do you transport?
A5. Firearms shall be carried unloaded and contained in a closed and fastened case, gunbox, securely tied package, or locked in the trunk of the automobile in which it is being transported.
Ammunition must be transported in a separate container and locked in the trunk of the automobile in which it is being transported.If the vehicle does not have a compartment separate from the passenger compartment, the firearm must be in a locked container other than the vehicle’s glove compartment or console.

The Division of Fish and Wildlife uses a computerized Integrated Electronic Licensing System (IELS). Meltzer’s Sporting Goods is a state agent using this IELS to sell hunting and fishing licenses; at this time we do not sell Shellfish Licenses.
You may purchase your hunting and fishing license at Meltzer’s Sporting Goods with cash only. No credit card, gift certificates or personal checks accepted.
When purchasing your first hunting license at Meltzer’s Sporting Goods you must prove successful completion of a hunter education course by showing a previous year’s license or Hunter Education card.
